Read about Grant in Business South

I apprenticed in Carpentry in the early 1970’s. Upon completion left New Zealand settling in Canada after a stint in Belgium cycle racing. I started a small carpentry business in a small town in Southern Ontario, which in 1976 became a limited company, running continuously for almost 25 years. Over the years this expanded from 10 to upwards of 60 employees.

Our projects were typically turn-key deals from large palatial mansions to renovations, additions and custom homes. Many of our jobs included period restoration. All our projects were of a loose sticks nature ie. Post & Beam, hand cut roofs, architecturally designed buildings; as prefabricated kit sets were not used in Canada.

My Kiwi building skill set predates the current stand up type of construction which seems to be the nature of the industry. This means that any challenge can be met in terms of building specifications.

Many, if not most of my clients in Canada were of the Canadian Establishment. Most were power brokers and Captains of Industry. One project in particular, which I directed and built, took almost 3 years to complete with 60 men. The Architect was out of New York City and at the same time as this project was retained by Bill Gates to design his principal residence in Seattle Washington. One of my projects also included building for the Premier of Ontario.

My underlying strengths are knowledge gained over 40 years in the building business. I have a natural ability for co-coordinating projects with drive and focus, and the ability to work with my team. I have a genuine like for all types of people. I am calm and easy to get along with, having built lasting relationships with many of my clients. As a result of my longstanding excellent reputation and work ethic, most of my jobs were by referral, on a cost plus basis, and sealed with a handshake.

After 30 years in Canada, my family decided to make a life style change and return to New Zealand. We have been back since 2004. Since that time I have completed many new projects which include our own new home, 3 large restorations in Akaroa, ie The Vangolis Building, The Tureen Building adjoining the 4-Square, and a large Farm house in Takamatua. We are currently working on a large Post & Beam building in Little River.

I have an excellent team and we are ready to take on projects large and small.
I realize that building the home of your dreams is an emotional time for most people and with the experience I have gained over the 40 years in this business, I can guarantee that Strahl Building can deliver.
